Resolved: Slower internet connection with TP LINK MR 3220 and MTS USB modem

Many wireless routers are available in the market that accept USB modem connectivity. I was tempted to buy one as I want to share wireless connectivity to my mobile devices at home. Before this, I used to connect my MTS Mblaze modem to my laptop and share the connection. But it is not comfortable to switch on laptop every time when wireless Internet is required for mobile device.

I did a lot of search and finally decided to buy TP Link MR 3220 model considering the price and positive feedback. I bought from flipkart COD option and the packet received in 4 days. I was excited to set it up for first time. But sooner I realized my MTS USB modem (ZTE AC2746) is not compatible with the router. As I connect the router says identifying-->identified-->connecting-->unplugged-->identifying. This goes in a loop and never connects. To my surprise, the particular showed up as compatible in TP link website. I tried the latest firmware in their site and that too did not work. I called up TP Link customer support and they
emailed me a firmware (mr3220v2_en_3_13_12_up(120524).bin) that supports AC2746 modem and I installed it.

This time the router page showed as modem connected :). Now I got Internet connection shared to my mobile device and laptop, but the speed is too slow and I could not identify whats the issue. When I connect the same modem to laptop I get a super speed. I was clueless and checked with customer guys again. They were not interested and simply asked me to send it back to their Mumbai address and they would replace it. Aahh!! I was disappointed and filed a replacement in flipkart.

By this time, I checked a lot in Internet and tried to figure out whats the issue. I could see similar problems but no solutions I found in any site. So I tried myself few options and finally I was able to sort it out. The issue was MTS modem when connected via router connects as 2G (1x) speed by default.

But we don't have any option in router page to change the connection as broadband. But you can easily change it by plugging the modem to laptop. Just open the MBlaze program and in the options if you see it is "Hybrid" or "1x", then you need to change to "Broadband". Click apply, unplug the modem and connect to router. This time the router will forcefully connect to Broadband speed. Remember, if you set it to Hybrid, the router will not switch it to Broadband mode even if its available. Now I get the charming speed over wireless network and I am happy with this router. It connects automatically with to network as power it on. Hope this helps someone.
